Inspections
Town of Chapel Hill Online Permit Center
How Do I Request An Inspection?
- In order to request an inspection, you must have a permit.
- Log in to the Online Permit Center, call the front desk at 919-968-2718, or email your request to permits@townofchapelhill.org to schedule an inspection.
- Before you call, determine exactly which inspections you need using Section 107 of the 2012 NC Administrative Code. Inspections happen in a specific sequence. Make sure you are requesting the appropriate inspection for your project.
- Provide the name and phone number contact information for an adult who will be onsite that can best represent work being performed.
- On the scheduled inspection day, an inspector will call that morning to provide a 2-hour window in which the inspection will occur.
- The property must be open or accessible at the time of inspection.
- Inspectors can only enter occupied homes if someone over 18 is present.
- Inspection results may be viewed in the Online Permit Center.
- If a reinspection is required, this process will be repeated.
- Please visit the Fee Schedule website for information about inspection and reinspection fees.
Departmental Guidelines
- Cancellation requests must be received by 9:30am the day of the inspection to avoid a reinspection fee. For large-scale projects, the cancellation deadline is 3pm the day before the date the inspection is scheduled. Reinspection fees will be applied to requests received outside these time frames.
- Cancellation requests need to be made using email or a phone call 919-968-2718 or permits@townofchapelhill.org. The online permit center does not have a cancellation request feature.
- You must use your permit number in all communication with our office. We cannot schedule an inspection without the permit number.
- Footings, slabs, and sewer services get first priority and are scheduled for the morning.
We aim to perform every inspection on the day it was scheduled. If we are unable to do so, we will prioritize the inspection for the next available business day. - We conduct inspections specified by Section 107 of the 2012 NC Administrative Code. You may access the NC State Codes here.
- Same day inspections are reserved for emergency situations (loss of water, power, heat, etc.).
